Internet speed is measured by how much data per second can be downloaded and uploaded. It totally depends on your Internet use, but the processes like uploading large files and video conferencing require decent speed.
First, you need to find out whether the slow download speed is due to your broadband connection or your wireless network. Since your wireless network is the bit over which you have control, you should check that first. In any case, optimizing and fine tuning your home or office wifi will improve performance.

Firstly, look at where your router is situated. Ideally, it should be in the centre of your house, so that every room gets a good signal. It should be away from walls, the floor and the ceiling as much as possible. And keep it away from metal furniture, which will reflect radio waves rather than allow them to pass through. Modern routers support both 5GHz and 2.4GHz networks. The latter allows for faster speeds, but the former suffers from less interference from other devices like microwave ovens and cordless telephones. So connect to the 5GHz network on devices that support it. If you have devices that only support 2.4GHz, place your router away from appliances like a microwave or cordless phone.
WiFi Explorer allows you to identify conflicts with other networks, identifies signal overlaps, and provides a graph of signal to noise ratio. By maximizing the signal v noise, you can improve signal performance and speed up downloads.
I've run a speed test on the computer itself and I am getting the expected 300Mbps as provided by my ISP. At this point I have no idea how I can get this to finish downloading in a reasonable time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
Unfortunately, it's a well-known fact that ever since Apple started using its own CDN to deliver software updates, the download performance can be crippling and abysmally slow. It has nothing to do with your system. The issue is on Apple's side. You can be lucky and get a fast download, at other times you will have to wait 12 hours for a 12 GB file to finish.
Restart the Router and Shutdown the computer. Move computer as close the Router as possible. Disconnect ALL Other devices using the Wifi - what the Max Bandwidth to this computer. Restart Router. Pause and Hold Power Button / Touch ID for ten seconds - if am correct - the M1 should bring up Options and choose Safe Mode - load slowly - normal. Once logged in Open the Apple Store and find Big Sur and download it. This will be the Full Version 11.3.1. It is going to take some time so be patient. Once successful there should be a New Application in Applications folder called Install Big Sur. Run this application and it will proceed to update. There will be several automatic reboots along the way until Setup Assist presents itself.
Several factors are responsible for slow downloads on your Mac. Some of these can be addressed by you, while some cannot. If you are facing reduced download speed on your Mac, then here are ways to fix the issue and increase the download speeds.
Before you read, it is essential to know why your internet is slow. Also, in this post, I am mostly talking about increasing download speed on browsers. But many of the tricks here are equally useful if you are downloading files from App Store, iTunes Store, and elsewhere.
You must be aware of your internet speeds. Some fluctuations in download speeds are normal. It depends on the number of users, location, time of the day, and even major events in the country or across the globe! Shocking?
Well, in India, whenever there is a big Cricket World Cup match or top Indian Premier League matches, the net speed of most mobile internet providers drop low. This is because a vast number of people are live streaming the game, and thus everyone in the area sees a reduction in speeds.
No matter what the causes are, in normal conditions, if you see exponentially reduced internet speed, then the first thing to do is to run a speed test. You may go to fast.com or speedtest.net and see what your download and upload speed on Mac is.
If a website has set download speed limits on their end, or if their server is weak and cannot provide fast downloads, then there is not much you can do. In case, there is an alternate website from where you can download the same file, try to use that.
Multiple third party sites let you download Mac and Windows software. But try to use only the official websites instead of some third-party marketplace. You will get superior download speeds via the official sites.
Are you streaming a movie on Netflix or watching our tutorials on YouTube? Maybe you are catching that new TV show on Disney+ and also downloading some files in the background? Well, when you close these streaming sites, the download speed will increase.
Managing downloads with a Download Manager app, extension/add-on might increase your download speed. They even let you organize your downloads or prioritize one over another. There are plenty of these on the respective stores of the browsers. For Chrome one that caught my eye is Free Download Manager.
One privilege of working for a media company is that I get to try several apps, services, and products. I have used, reviewed, and am acquainted with a dozen VPN apps. Let me tell you straight up, that almost every VPN (even with a premium subscription) slows down your speed.
If you have access to multiple networks around you, then try to switch to a different Wi-Fi network. There are several reasons that the current Wi-Fi network may be slow and buggy. The second network you connect to may have fewer users and thus less congestion, that will ultimately deliver increased download speeds.
Here in our office, we have multiple Wi-Fi networks. We have the 5-GHz band as well as 2.4 GHz. If you, too, have such available options, then try to connect to the 5-GHz Wi-Fi network. It will yield better download speeds. But make sure you are not physically too far from the router.
Whenever too many people use your Wi-Fi, it is bound to decrease your download speeds. Set a password for your Wi-Fi network to ensure that it is only you and your family that is using it. Also, if you believe your neighbors know your current Wi-Fi password, change it immediately.
If you have automatic macOS updates, then a new version of macOS may be downloading in the background, which you are not aware of. To check and cancel this download and increase your other download speed, follow the steps below.
However, this also means that there may be times when this update is being downloaded. So it is quite likely that for a few minutes, downloads and web browsing inside your browser are slow. But after the updates are downloaded, your speed will resume to normal.
These were the ways to increase the download speed on your Mac. Now, one last thing that I did not mention above is switching to a newer device. Most new Macs have better Wi-Fi antennas and can provide faster download speeds.
If your Mac is still downloading slowly on another known network, the issue is likely with your device and not the network itself. In this case, you should jump to step three of this troubleshooting guide: close unnecessary apps and tabs.
If slow downloads are occurring only on one particular network, the issue could be other devices hogging the bandwidth. For example, if a housemate or family member is downloading a big file on their PC, it will affect the speed of everyone else on the network.
This all seems ok from what I've read, however, the Wi-Fi still runs very slowly on my Mac. When I run an internet speed test my download speed is consistently
I found that the WiFi on my MacBook Pro (late-2013) works slowly on 5 GHz / 80 MHz channels (topping out at about 30 Mbps). Enough so that it's at least 3x faster when connected to the 2.4 GHz band in the same router (and I say at least because I can't measure any higher). So, if your router works in the 2 bands and your Mac is switching between them transparently (as it usually does, which usually is advantageous), then you would be seeing big, mysterious changes in speed.
I have been seriously struggling with my WiFi every morning in my new office and could not figure out why. Speedtest was 'very slow' on my Macbook Pro 2015 and super quick on iPhone 8, it has been painful and driving me nuts!! It usually got quicker throughout the day, but unbearable in the morning.
It is very annoying but I think Mac books uses very bad quality wifi network card. My wifi router shows connection speed between devices and router. There is only one wall between router and my mac. My mac's speed is barely above 5 Mb and I usually see 1 Mb. Even my ping from mac to router takes 2 seconds sometimes. If I move my mac to next to the router, speed increases to 130 Mb. Hence, my 5 years old iPhone 6s is never below 50 Mb, 7 years old sony android speed is never below 70 Mb. Sometimes, I think there is maybe a iWifi product by Apple which I have to buy to get better wifi connection just for I can use wifi in another room.My solution is to take a wifi router exclusively for my mac will work just 1 meter away from the mac.

As you may have noticed in the speedtest, your internet has both an upload and a download speed. This is measured in Mbps, or megabits per second, and counts how much data your connection can transfer from the web to your computer. 2ff7e9595c
