Some special effects artists and animators create their work primarily by using computer software or by writing their own computer code. Many animation companies have their own computer animation software that artists must learn to use. Video game designers also work in a variety of platforms, including mobile gaming and online social networks.
Time-management skills. The workdays required by most studio and game design companies can be long, particularly when there are tight deadlines. Artists and animators need to be able to manage their time effectively when a deadline approaches.

Visual Arts, as defined by the National Art Education Association, include the traditional fine arts such as drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and sculpture; media arts including film, graphic communications, animation, and emerging technologies; architectural, environmental, and industrial arts such as urban, interior, product, and landscape design; folk arts; and works of art such as ceramics, fibers, jewelry, works in wood, paper, and other materials.
Graphic designers create visual concepts, using computer software or by hand, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, and captivate consumers. They develop the overall layout and production design for applications such as advertisements, brochures, magazines, and reports.
Some graphic designers specialize in experiential graphic design. These designers work with architects, industrial designers, landscape architects, and interior designers to create interactive design environments, such as museum exhibitions, public arts exhibits, and retail spaces.
Graphic designers generally work in studios, where they have access to equipment such as drafting tables, computers, and software. Although many graphic designers work independently, those who work for specialized graphic design firms are often part of a design team. Many graphic designers collaborate with colleagues or work with clients on projects.
The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits more than 360 postsecondary colleges, universities, and independent institutes with programs in art and design. Most programs include courses in studio art, principles of design, computerized design, commercial graphics production, printing techniques, and website design. In addition, students should consider courses in writing, marketing, and business, all of which are useful in helping designers work effectively on project teams.
Graphic designers must keep up with new and updated computer graphics and design software, either on their own or through formal software training programs. Professional associations that specialize in graphic design, such as AIGA, offer courses intended to keep the skills of their members up to date.
Artistic ability. Graphic designers must be able to create designs that are artistically interesting and appealing to clients and consumers. They produce rough illustrations of design ideas, either by hand sketching or by using computer programs.
Arts & Design builds upon the design mandate dating back to when the New York City subway was first constructed. On opening day in 1904, the founders declared the system a "great public work," for both the access and efficiency it would provide New Yorkers, and for the emphasis on creating an inviting space through beautiful ornamentation, craft, and good design. This emphasis is carried forward in Arts & Design's visual and performing arts programs, and design initiatives that contribute to the cultural vitality of the transit system, a place where millions come together each day.
The Department of Art and Design awards the Bachelor of Art and Design degree. The Bachelor of Art and Design degree is a broadly based, multidisciplinary undergraduate experience that fully utilizes a diverse faculty and bridges media arts, design, and technology. Students work closely with faculty in a well-planned sequence of progressively complex and in-depth studios leading to concentrations in one of three areas: Animation (2D + 3D), Gaming + Interaction Design, or Fibers + Soft Construction. Students are advised through learning paths designed to produce optimal outcomes. This degree program provides a sound, well-rounded visual design education with a focus on providing students skills that allow them to perform and succeed in a wide variety of art and design professions after graduation.
The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) is a terminal studio degree designed to further the individual development of degree candidates and to provide them with professional competency in the studio arts. Areas of focus in the Department of Art and Design include:
SIUE is home to two connected buildings devoted exclusively to art and design. Art and Design West was completed in 2012, and is a LEED-certified building. The renovation of Art and Design East was completed in 2013, and includes larger, improved studio spaces. Each graduate student in the art studio program has their own private studio with year-round, 24-hour building access.
Degree programs feature a rigorous foundation program, a set of six courses that students often complete by participating in the popular Contemporary Art & Artists First-Year Interest Group (FIG), before branching out into one or more specialized areas such as book arts, ceramics, comics, digital animation, glass and neon, graphic design, painting, performance/video, photography, sculpture, social practices, etc.
Potential Careers for Artists include: animation, ceramics, glassblowing, metal fabrication, graphic and multi-media design, illustration, videography, photography, teaching, and (of course) as a gallery artist. Our graduates also work as community arts organizers, user experience designers, medical imagists, technical assistants for major film companies, jewelry designers and fabricators, book designers, and more.
The Art Foundations Program is a series of interrelated studio and lecture courses to be taken by art and art education majors in their first year as preparation for further study in studio art and design. The program addresses the fundamentals of art through investigation of formal, technical and conceptual issues. The drawing, 2D and 3D design, digital media, and art historical lecture classes are designed to expose, broaden, and challenge students' understanding of contemporary art production.
Although a concentration is not required, students may wish to select a sequence of related courses to develop an area of interest. Concentrations in multi-media, 2D studio, 3D studio, and printmaking are just some of the concentrations listed on the art department's website. Students wishing to concentrate in graphic design should declare the Graphic Design Named Option when eligible..

Visual artists generally fall into two categories: designers or fine artists. However, UM School of Art and Design makes no such distinction, recognizing that all artists are designers and all designers are artists. The curriculum promotes the development of skills, concepts, and sensitivities essential to all arts. The successful student will achieve a high level of technical competence, a sensitivity to artistic style, a broad knowledge of the history of art and design, and an insight into its role in society.
The School of Art and Design offers 3 undergraduate degrees: a BFA in Art and Design, a BA in Art and Design, and a BFA in Interarts Performance (an interdisciplinary program with the Theater and Drama Department). While the BFA program is an intense, rigorous program in Art and Design, the BA degree allows students to utilize a wide range of University resources and has fewer studio course requirements. 2ff7e9595c
